Image processing has been used to achieve a serigraph-like effect. Electronic Photography with live model by the Artist.

The photography session was carried out with the video monitor turned toward the model. She could see herself and work with poses which she found pleasing. It was a collaborative effort in which the model took an active role.

Hardware/Software used: AT&T PC6300, Targa-16 image capture board, Panasonic color camera at Dr. Tom DeFanti's Electronic Visualization Lab, University of Illinois at Chicago, Silicon Graphics Iris 2400T workstation, custom software written by the artist.

The image processing operation is the Laplacian (second vector derivative or "edge extraction") of the image brightness function. Computer rendering of the luminance contour graph of a digitally captured video camera image (electronic photograph). The luminance contour graph has been interpreted as a polygon mesh. The vertical and horizontal dimensions of the object correspond to those of the photograph, the depth dimension has been derived sample-by-sample from the brightness of the photograph.

This photograph is a proposal for a sculpture to be created by direct numerically-controlled machining in laminated plastic.

Hardware/Software used: Silicon Graphics Iris 2400T workstation, custom software written by the artist, rendering by Wavefront Technologies Advanced Visualizer.

The luminance contour graph (see above) of the digital image was horizontally 'sliced' in software at the equi-luminance contours. The compliment of the cross-sections were then burned away, layer-by-layer, using a Carbon Dioxide computer-interfaced sign-cutting laser.
