This image is included mainly to reinforce the idea that there is neural integration between the body and the brain. There is also a corresponding map of the motor function from the brain to the body -- e.g.: The portion of the brain dedicated to moving each corresponding region of the body.
And we know that the human brain has evolved beyond the point where it is merely a control center for moving the body around. We have evolved mechanisms of higher thought, sentience, a soul, if you will. We have means, through language of describing our sense of self, physically, intellectually and spiritually.
This sense of integral self is frequently an arena of philosophical debate: Issues of self-image related to eating disorders, for example; The sanctity of the individual relating to abortion, gay rights; etc.
Body Language is a mechanism for hosting a multi-media-based public dialogue on the body self-image. It is a way of collecting and displaying a large number of responses -- ideas by individuals relating to their bodies. Body Language is also an Art engine -- which automatically generates in text and images a cubist collage representing a collective self-consiousness.
Corpus Mathematica is an attempt to physically integrate abstract language with a 3-D representation of the body. In the final extension of Corpus Mathematica, I propose to integrate with the figure sculpture captions which speak about the psychological state of the subject.
How does one go about collecting intimate statements on how people feel about their bodies? I have chosen the Internet as a way of attracting people into an intimate dialogue in which such statements might be induced to flow. It is a way of harnessing creative energy through a collaborative community spirit.
I intend that responses entered into Body Language will be incorporated into works arising from Corpus Mathematica. But, note: by entering VRML fragments into Body Language, Body Language itself may create 'Cubist Collages' in full 3-D.
