Why I love overalls

Overalls, for me, are the most utilitarian clothing possible. I actually have a sizeable collection of overalls, most of them custom made.

I started wearing overalls a lot when I got into film school- the pockets sure came in handy on film shoots 'cos I did a lot of lighting for my friends. I can hang my gloves on the hammer loop, put an adjustable wrench in the tool pocket on my right thigh, and not feel self-conscious when it gets hot and I strip off my shirt. (believe me, it sure gets hot in a small studio when you have 10 different 2k instruments (lights) running- but I normally leave my sports bra on in the interests of modesty.)

I wear my buttons on the upper right chest of my overalls, just above the front pocket. There they don't get in the way, but people can see that I'm very out of the closet.

My good friend and housemate at Harvard/Radcliffe, Julia, does a lot of human rights work in Africa, and has managed to have a bunch of overalls made for me there, where tailoring is still considered an art and a necessity. Most of these aren't made from the heavy-duty denim that my work overalls are made of, but are what I would consider "dress overalls" for everything from jaunting about in, to work at the office, to semi-formal events.

Due to overwhemling demand, I will be adding a few photos of my overalls, and I will be adding some photos of me in overalls. Since I first need to pick them and then scan and color-correct them, it may be a few weeks before that happens. Check back!
