More on my name: Cristin Van Cleaf Pescosolido

Oh. About my name. I dropped the "h" in my first name a few years ago because I liked the look of Cristin. Besides, Cris is much more dykey, don't you think?

The only problem with the new spelling of my first name is that it seems to be hard for people to spell. They always want to spell it "Kristin" or "Kristen" or "Christin" or some other variation. Oh, well.

I actually have two middle names, believe it or not.

It actually goes as one, "Van Cleaf," but when people ask for my middle initial, I never know what to give them. Standardized test forms drive me nuts.
The name Van Cleaf is Dutch, and it apparrently comes from way back on my father's mother's side of the family, but I don't know where.

Now for the fun part: my last name, Pescosolido.

My last name is Italian, and my heritage is mostly Italian with a lot of Lithuanian and some Dutch thrown in.

"Pescosolido" is actually much easier to pronounce than most beople believe at first glance. It is just about like it is spelled. Try PES-KO-SO-LEE-DO
I have been told that in archaic Italian, "pesco" meant "rock" or "stone." Thus, pesco-solido would mean "solid stone." In modern Italian, however, I have been told that pesco means "peach." Supposedly for the stone in the middle of the fruit. So, pesco-solido would mean "solid peach." Hmm.

For anyone who is very familiar with Italy, there is a town of Pescosolido in the hills outside Rome. It is in a cul-de-sac formed by mountains, and, not being in a mountain pass, it wasn't sacked quite as often as other Italian villages throughout the ages.

Anyone familiar with tennis might recognize the name of Stephano Pescosolido.
He is an Italian tennis star who recently gave the Americans a run for their money in the Davis Cup. As far as I know, we aren't directly related, but I bet our ancestors all come from the same town...
