A while ago, I got some random email from this guy, proposing that I put an advertisement on my web pages for a 900 number service he was running.

I didn't bother responding with more than a "not even," but this seemed like such a bad idea that I thought I'd make a page about it. So, without any more drivel about how much I hate sleazy guys and 900 numbers, here is the text of his message:

I am contacting you regarding a joint venture you may be interested in. One of the reasons I am contacting you is the fact that you have a popular home page and I have a product that would fit in well with the content of your page.

I own a Dating Line, accessible through a voice 900 number. I would like to advertise on your page in return for a guarantee of 30 cents per minutes generated from your page. The 900 number I have is operated by the largest 900 company in the United Sta tes and has a database of over 65,000 voice messages from single people across America looking to meet other singles. One of the features of this line is the Men Seeking Men ads and the Women Seeking Women Ads.

The way the number works is that one would call up the 900 number and either browse through existing messages of singles in their area and leave voice messages, leave their own voice messages, thus creating their own voice mailbox, or listen to messages t hat have been left in their boxes. They are charged $2.49 per minute while on the line.

The average caller will spend 7 minutes each call and on average call between 3 and 4 times. It has been proven that whether the callers are browsing, leaving messages or responding to messages, they call back.

If you agree to advertise this line on your page I will issue you an exclusive extension, that only you will have. I will also issue you a normal toll phone number where you may check to see how many minutes have been generated on your extension. Then I will issue you monthly checks, at 30 cents per minute, to compensate you for your advertisement. It is an extremely easy way for you to generate revenue from your page with very minimal work.

If you agree to advertise this line I will send you a photo (sexy, no nudity) of a model, the 900 number, the extension, and a description of the line so you may advertise it. You may put it in as many places as you like, the more places the more calls the more money and you may start right away tracking the number of minutes being generated. We will also sign a brief contract to protect you so you will know that you will be paid. Keep in mind that it takes 90 days from when the call takes place, to b e charged and billed and received by me at which point I will issue you a company check.
