"Your own mind is a sacred enclosure into which nothing harmful can enter except
Arnold Bennett "The medium is the message." - McLuhan ants under a mushroom is an interactive collage, addressing the malleability of the non-fiction image, the credibility of both the image and perception, and the boundaries between documentary and abstraction. In ants under a mushroom, the participant "paints" with a variety of moving and still images. Although there are several hundred different images and video clips stored in the piece, only a few appear on screen at any moment. The images which appear on screen at a given time are determined algorithmically, and based on both formal (color, composition, movement) and content-based criteria. The visitor's choices of images with which to paint are taken into account when the program selects a new image to put on screen; however, the continuity of the collage is also considered by the program when making its decisions.
ants under a mushroom has been exhibited at the FIV International Festival of Video and Electronic Art, Buenos Aires, and at SIGGRAPH '97, Los Angeles. It can currently be seen in the Los Angeles area as part of the Newmediaman Art Group.
