In most of the articles we have read involving Bill Gates and/or Mirosoft, the author/s have dedicated most of their time describing Gates and his company, not through their actions, but in more simpler terms, or "adjectives", as we like to call them. Instead of giving facts on Microsoft and how they've done wrong to America and it's people, they spend their time coming up with new and improved "dirty" words, woven carefully into the text, almost to the point where you don't realize that you have read them. Yet, when you finish the article, you are left with a very strong opinion of ol' Bill, without fully understanding where this opinion has come from in the first place.

Of course, every article is different, with some worse than others. Some articles are written with a high amount of involved reference work and research done, using this information to relate facts to the public, explaining, in their "informed" opinion, what Microsoft and Bill Gates have done for or against America, and it's people. On the other side, we have articles that are pure hate rags. Papers written for one purpose only, to make people hate Bill Gates. Whether or not these feelings are justified are inconsiquential. These articles are pure propaganda. And since they have no real facts and information to rely upon, these resort to emotion and tricks to drive their opinions across.

As you would expect, these authors pick only the juiciest of choice words to describe the "Microsoft behemoth". Such as hungry, dominate, mafia, tolitarium system, and my personal favorite, a marionette of hate. These words are used for the sole purpose of inspiring visual ideas in the reader, the kind of "monster" the author wants Gates portrayed as.

The term "evil empire" brings back visual memories of Star Wars, where the pure and innocent rebellion fights with justice on their side against the tyranny of Darth Vador and the Empire, whose only goal is the entire conquest of the known universe. Nothing stands in their way. They have vastly superior technology and the audacity to use it. Leaving behind destoyed lives, and incinerated planets. Also, snippets of Orwell's 1984, peek through. With visions of "Big Brother" looming above everyones shoulder, his hands in everything, he himself being, everything. Is this what Micorsoft is? Is this what it will become? Probably not. But when you read this, it certainly brings a new light on the company, and shades of unease and paranoia begin to take place within the reader.

"Juggernaught", another delightful description of the Microsoft/Bill Gates "empire", remindes me of a comic-book super-villan who fought "Spider-Man" and the "X-men" when I was a kid. The "Juggernaught" was a normal person, who from a stroke of luck, descovered a rare jewel that gave him super-natural powers. In these powers was the ability that once moving, nothing could physically stop the "Juggernaught", as well as being physically immoveable, himself. Nothing could stop him, nor could he be moved. Is this Gates in comic-book form?

And what about "hungry"? What a deliciously tasty way to describe a corporation. Picture Bill Gates, towering over city streets, smashing buildings which stand before him, crushing tiny cars beneathe his feet. Stand aside King Kong and Godzilla, there's a new kid in town, with a neverending appetite for devouring those which stand in his way. A monster who makes "deliberate efforts to destroy others". A beast whose actions are full of "ethical violations". Whose goal is to "kill the market" and "vaporize compitition".

These are but a few of the artful descriptions out there, painting Gates, so that readers don't have to waste precious energy developing there own opinions. Who needs individual thought when you have creative authers out there writing them for you. How about "eliminating", "crushing", "seduction" (oooh, that's good. Sex and violence have always drawn big crowds), and "predator" (Which, incidentaly, was the title of a very good Arnold Swarzenagger, sci-fi, save-the-world-from-unstoppable-evil-alien, action, horror, flick.)

So how does these writings compare to Vaughns theory on the "unconcious story" within us all? Well, most of these "unconscious stories" come to us, even though fragmented, in dreams, fantasies, and memories. These "stories" collect all of our desires, and fears (conscious and unconscious), and designs them into a "cohessive life narrative", bringing us closer to self-understanding, freedom within ourselves, and mental (and even physical) balance. And as far as Bill Gates type "monster lurking around in someone's unconciousness, I think people need these types of villans for many reasons.

The foremost reason, I feel, people have it out for Bill Gates and Microsoft, is pure jealousy. I'm mean let's be honest. Who wouldn't drop whatever they're doing to become one of the richest men in the world. People are just mad that he went and had a good idea and acted upon it. I have a feeling none of the people bashing Gates at the moment, would do anything different than what he did when he started, as well as now. The public who speaks out against Bill Gates, remindes me of Christoph, who fears the monsters, whom he feels are out to get him, yet secretly, wants to be one of the monsters, himself.

So, in turn, people are embarresed and insecure by the fact they are jealous of Bill Gates and Microsoft, and are lashing out with anger. This in turn makes them feel better. They've turned Gates into a typical movie monster/villan in their "life stories" (You know. The kind people LOVE to HATE) , that way they don't have to face their own problems. What could be better? If you're lazy, have a bad work ethic, not very creative or outgoing, what could be better than to have someone to blame all your failures upon? Why punish yourself, when you can hurt someone else?

Now, I'm not saying Gates is an angel, here. He's got just as many dirty secrets as the rest of us. Yet it is human nature to tear down those who have succeeded. If they have an "arch-enemy" to fight against, then there own actions are in-turn, justified, because they are fighting on the side of "truth and justice and the American way" and against the evil that Gates and Microsoft represent. I mean, the "American way" is the freedom to make yourself rich, isn't it?
